I have been on a low salt diet for several months now, last week I found the food logs on this site and have discovered that even though I thought I was cutting out a lot of my salt by eating less boxed and canned foods I can't seem to manage to keep my intake below 1500mg a day. Any advice on what I can do differently?

1500 mg or less is the recommendation from The American Heart Association but processed foods and restaurant meals don't make it easy! Here are some tips to help you stay in a healthy range:

5 Tips on Reducing Salt Intake

I'm glad you're using the food trackers. I find logging my food and activity extremely helpful and motivating.

You might check to see that you are eating a lot of foods with potassium.

The are some reports that the ratio of potassium to sodium is more important than just the amount of sodium.

Thanks for the information. It amazed me, by using the tracker, how much salt was hidden in the little things. I have been reading labels and I don't use salt in any of my cooking. But I still managed to be going over the 1500mg.
I went out and found a low salt cookbook put out by the heart association and am sitting down this weekend and planning out my meals for 2 weeks. I really have come to love this site and the tracking program!

I saw this link about low sodium substitution. Things that I would have never thought of such as molasses and rice vinegar to replace Asian sauces.

Bill thanks for the link. What I was able to read before work was very interesting. I am going to print it off and finish reading it.
