High BP while lying down or during sleep

My dad [68 years old> has hypertension and has undergone a CABG 18 months back. His blood pressure is generally stable, however spikes up when he is lying down or during sleep. Sometimes it even reaches absurd levels like 170/90 - not symptomatic though. Each time we visit the physician, the meds are changed but it does not help this particular problem - i.e. nocturnal hypertension. I am trying to explore if raising his upper body while sleeping either using a reclining bed or a wedge support may help. Without any medical background, it is obvious that the heart for some reason [may be due to nonrhythmic breathing> in his case has to do more effort while pumping blood in sleeping position versus standing position so if his sleeping posture can be raised at certain angle from middle to lower back to head, it may help. I am frustrated with the fact, that no doctor is able to suggest a solution to the problem other that to increase the BP med dosage or to change the medications. My dad already takes metropolol (50 mg * 2), rampril (25 mg *2), and amlodipine (2.5 mg*1). I will appreciate if anyone having experienced this problem could advise..

No medical professional responds in this forum. So just some random thoughts.

May be this has been done, but ask for an ambulatory BP test. Will give a profile of what his blood pressure does over a 24 hr period.

It is recommend that at least part of the BP meds be taken at night. But if he is taken several twice a day I assume that it he doing that.

I know some kinds of heart damage make it hard to breath laying down, but I don't know the details. Has he talked to his cardiologist about this. It would help if he knew his exact diagnoses.

And sleep problems can cause high BP and heart disease. Has he had a sleep study.

You might want to ask over in the heart forum where a cardiologist responds to some of the questions.

I have high blood pressure. I have found that sleeping on an incline has helped me sleep better and lessened the feeling of pressure to my head while I sleep.
