    20 years and learning to live with IBS.

    I've had symptoms of IBS since I was about 13 or 14, and now it's really starting to bother me. I'm about to be 20, and I was wondering if you guys have suggestions for diet for someone who is 97 lbs and 5'3". I'm extremely small so I usually need to eat quite a bit to keep my weight up.

    I've had trouble with BMs for a few days now, only going very little at a time, and sometimes having to struggle to go. I've been trying stool softener but I'm not entirely sure if it's really having any effect.

    So I was wondering if you guys have any suggestions for some good and delish foods I can maybe try to keep my regular. I'm thinking of picking up some Benefiber mix since that may work, but I'm really quite wary of those Fiber One bars because they give me some pretty wicked stomach pains along with diarrhea, which I guess solves my problem, but I'd rather do it in a less painful and uncomfortable manner.

    So does anyone have any suggestions? I'm about to go to bed and I just took some stool softener again to see if it helps tomorrow. And I'm going to try an apple in the morning for breakfast.

    I have had IBS-constipation, since I was 16. I am now 35. I have been on every medicine and tried everything, diet, exercise, stress reduction and nothing works. My doctor told me to dry Miralax and believe it or not, it works!!! I love the fact that it does not taste bad. You can use it on almost any and everything!!! So try Miralax. Good luck!!

    Totally understand, I developed serious symptoms on Jan 1st,2011. Chronic pain, bloating, pressure, chronic diahrea. All of these symptoms lead to severe weight loss, added to that I had lost my health insurance. I got into the public health system and ended up with a quack doctor who reassured me that the complete holistic path was the way to go, that was last Feb, and I asked time ad time again to see a GI specialist, he resisted this over many months even though I was wasting away. Finally I confronted him and demanded an appt. he said he would do his best. Well he did get me an appt. in Aug of this year, I had lost 29 lbs by now, then he never contacted me for the appt, I was furious and filed a grievance with the Dept. of public health. The ball started to roll and on Oct 31st I had a combined endoscopic and colonoscopy which revealed a problem with bulging blood vessels in my duodenum which was blocking movement from my stomach to my bowel. I'm on a new med called reglan and will continue to be monitored with follow ups etc. I now weigh 93 lbs at 5'6. I have a glimmer of hope now and my message to is you get aggressive with your health provider or get into a program and fight for you health. No one will do it for you, I learned this the very hard way.Start the fight today! My prayers and thoughts are with you.

    Admittedly, we are coming form very different backgrounds, but I have had IBS for as long as I can remember. I am now 40, and, while I am a male who wishes keeping the weight UP was a problem, your symptoms sound very similar to mine. I had the same violent reaction to those fiber bars. One bar was enough for me to say, 'never again'.

    What I have found manages the problem better than anything else I have tried (and believe me, that list has been extensive) is Dannon's Activia yogurt. I buy the "Light", but it sounds like you can have the calories if you want.

    Be careful about the apple. If you're like me, the peal doesn't digest too easily, but I highly recommend the Jona Gold
