Ok... about 9 months ago I had been having issues with having bowl movements. I went to a GI and he said i had IBS... and sent me on my way. A few months later I found out I had kidney stones had the shock wave treatment in October, and another in December. Both times I had gotten x-rays and you could see I was totally full of stool. the Dr put me on colace (sp?) I didn't really think much of it... well about 4 weeks ago I just couldn't go to the bathroom and was having horrible abdominal pain... and after a few days I went to my family Dr and she took an xray and said I was way full of stool. She told me to take some magnesium citrate and some miralax. After taking 10 oz of the magnesium nothing had happened except a little diarrhea. so I took the miralax... not much happened, so I was told to take some duralax. that didn't really help either. i was still having bad abdominal pain and my stomach was very distended... so the family Dr told me to go to the er. after waiting at the er for 3 hours i got an xray of my stomach... waited another hour for her to tell me i was fine and i could go home. a few days later i finally had a bowl movement.... and since then I've been going every few days... its not much... but my stomach is feeling a little better... don't seem to be as bloated. but here's my issue now, i have pain every once in a while, but sometimes i see a little red in my stool and this morning it had like... black mucus like stuff all over it. i thought maybe i just hadn't fully digested something?

I was just wondering if maybe I should just chill out, or should I go back to the Dr or get another opinion? I'm really embarrassed about my constant change in bowl habits and looking like im pregnant from bloating! this whole situation is a little embarrassing.

Please, any advice would be great now. Thank you!

Red Flag Waving

Black tarry mucus stool is a sign of blood. You MUST get this looked at ASAP!!

Miralax takes a few days of taking it daily before it really works.

When the GI doctor sent you on your wayy with IBS did they do any kind of testing?

im just not sure it was actually like... tarry. it was just black. i read that some vegies dont always digest the right way and i had spinach last night at dinner... so maybe thats what it is??? If i see it again tomorrow... then i will be calling my dr!
i took the miralax for a week and its been almost 2 weeks since i stopped taking it...
and i had a quick sigmoidoscopy (sp?) thats it. i only went there once to make the appointment then to actually have the sig...

i dont really want to make a big deal if its just normal... but i feel like something just isn't right.

I agree with MagPrincess. If you're seeing black mucus that needs to be checked out. I've never seen spinach do that. there are other causes of black, but a doc should see you for that. Black can mean blood that's further up the GI tract, whereas red blood usually is just from hemorrhoids or fissures near the end. It doesn't sound like they tested you very thoroughly and ought to give you a colonoscopy if they don't find an explanation.

Go with your Gut! If you feel something is not right you need to have everything explored until you are satisfied. Remember you pay them not the other way around.

I agree it is rare that a food will cause the black stool.

I don't know how to tell if it is tarry short of touching it. lol that i won't do! lol. but black is a deffinete sign you must get it looked at.

I also agree with earthtonegirl that it does not sound as if they did much to rule out other things before. At the very least they need to do a colonoscopy.

A ct scan was what I had to have in order to determine that I had diverticulitis. You should go to the ER and ask them about it. If it is diverticulitis, you want it taken care of ASAP before the colon perforates.

Find a GI with some sense & DEMAND a colonoscopy! Even if you think you are too young to have colon cancer, there are plenty of people in their 30's being diagnosed today! (Even younger for the hereditary kind.) Ask for HalfLytley prep & make sure you drink it ALL. Good prep is necessary for the doc to see any polyps or tumors in there. Don't delay. Early diagnosis is key to a cure. Good luck & let us know what happens.

When I have a problem with no bowel movement, it usually means that I have not drunk enough liquids, mainly not enough water. Body is over 75% water. DRINK MORE WATER.

If concerned about your water quality. Just boil for minimum 7 minutes first and then refrigerate.

Boiling cleans the water.

You might want to talk to your Gastro. Doc if you haven't already and schedule a Colonoscopy this doesn't sound like IBS more like IBD (Crohn's or UC) and you cannot diagnose that with and x-ray..

have you considered any kind of food allergy. i used to have a distended belly from undiagnosed celiac disease. my stool kept changing too. ask your gastro about this possibilty when you see him.
