    I just dont know how to treat

    Hi my name is Liss and I was diagnosed with IBS when I was 20, and I am now 23, and initially I scheduled to see a GI specialist, and she told me I could mostly control it with diet, I avoided fructose, sugar, and grease... theres not alot of things I like to eat that fits the category, I lost 15 pounds doing it though! Dont think it helped with IBS ALOT, but it did help. I've felt that my symtoms were tolerable, and started eating sugars and fats again. I lost 30 pounds last year, and gained 15 back. Id like to stay below 140, but now I am somewhere around 157 Ill bet. I am addicted to Soda, I get at least one 32 oz coca cola a day.
    I dont experience the constipation side of IBS nearly as much as the diarrhea side... I have BMs at least two or three times a day, every day, and they are always loose, mucousy and you can see what I ate the day before in the midst of it...
    I have been trying not to be concerned since last year when I had my colonoscopy, and they told me everything looked good, I still feel as if my food is not digesting fully, and that it goes through me way too fast. I am always tired, and its probably cause my body is malnutritioned, and over working the digestive organs... something has to be causing it, I never had trouble until I was 20. But doctors dont seem to wanna go after the problem aggressively, with my age "nothing could possibly be wrong" but I have read some posts where folks have had a endoscopy (which im afraid of! tubes going down my nose into my throat!) and they find blood vessels blocking, or the jujunum is messed up... I dont think I have a blockage, I am not sure what I really expect them to find...
    But I just have no idea how to treat my symptoms really. Its so embarrassing at work (I'm a medical assistant) Im always in our bathroom more often then anyone else, I'll be rooming patients and my stomach is bubbling and gassy, trying my best not to gross out my patients with farting or noises coming from myself!
    I like to plan dates with men on nights that I feel my symptoms are minimal, and Ill avoid dinner dates to avoid running to the bathroom on a date... I left my brothers super bowl party early last sunday cause his ribs made me feel like I'd have an explosion. He gave me alka seltzer but that didnt help...
    Ive never had a problem with heartburn til the past few months, can heart burn be a sign of something else other then IBS?? I dont know, I dont wanna waste money at the doctor if I dont know what questions to ask, how to be aggressive about this, Id like to know what treatments people have tried that do and dont work, and what I should eat, if there are over the counter meds that give fast relief?
    I have some gas tablets, they dont help much. Pepto... I dont know if pepto helps much, I dont have trouble with constipation as much, but I do know fiber and stool softener help with that for me...
    I also remember reading some where mucous in your stool can be a symptom of fibromyalgia, and I COULD have fibromyalgia, I havent been tested yet, with the 18 points of pain, but I have random points on my body that hurt and ache at times.
    Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks webMD friends!

    Hi I am new here but Not new to IBS. I am 43 now and have lived with this monster since my early thirties. I have the constipation part of IBS, sometimes I cant go for 6 days. I dont believe there is a cure for this. Eventually you learn to live with it, try to remember your trigger foods and what works for you.
    I have tried everything, (Miralax) created the worst stomach gurgling of my life plus it did not help. Its scary because before I would worry because of my stomach gurgling in meeting, or I need to run to the loo. My remedy now is I know I have this problem so if I need to run to bathroom I just go, The gurgling was unbearable waking me from sleep and keeping my husband and myself up and its embarassing. So I took things into my own hands. This may not work for you but this is what I have to do to live with it. I think I have learned now how to control my IBS.
    Firstly your diet eat healthier plus exercise. I take an over the counter pill called Natures Secret Super cleanse it is gentle on the stomach and you get relief from chronic constipation. I only take these (5) pills in the morning and it seems to regulate me. Once in a while I get bouts where I almost have to sprint to the bathroom. If I dont take these pills I dont go then am crampy, bloated and have intense spasms etc. I probably should not be using this cleanser pill as much but its the Only thing that works for me, I can't live without it. Hope this helps.

    I think I am just going to try some digestive enzyme suppliments, and increase dietary fiber... try to stay away from sugar.
    I think those are my triggers, and from what I have learned so far, its best to avoid triggers to treat IBS, and thats about the only way

    Totally normal. My colitis acts up whenever I have my period and when I asked my GI about it she said that she sees a lot of premenopausal women as fluctuating hormones = fluctuating bowel movements.

    I have heard caffiene is bad, and I drink alot of caffiene... I cant work with out my coffee...
    I drink alot of soda that has sugar and caffiene in it too, I havent really tried cutting either of these out of my diet, because they are things that help me stay awake at work.

    Has anyone had the same problem, and found that when they finally cut out caffiene they felt better??

    I have never been prescribed an anti spasmodic med, and I wonder if they work well, or if there are risk factors that make my doc think its not for me?

    I do! I believe it's rather normal and can be triggered by the change in hormones. I have heard of many women who get IBS during pregnancy and after, when never having it before.

    Okay, I think I can help with this one! Our symptoms are very similar, but I get constipation instead of the diarrhea. I do get the really bad heartburn I take tums because it's just calcium..regular medicines tend to upset my stomach. I have never tried pepto, but am trying to stay away from supplements. I feel like it's more of a prevention thing. It's really important to watch what you eat and stay away from fatty and greasy foods. Since you have the constipation try eating sourdough and french breads. I suggest taking an easily digestible vitamin.. I'm looking for one myself. Soft kinds or liquid work best.

    Try to go on dates Just be careful about what you eat. Stay away from things like a big steak or ranch dressing. There are a lot of sites that list "trigger foods". I suggest keeping a food journal (I know it sucks), but then maybe you can track what bothers you and what doesn't.

    The mucous stuff is normal for IBS, I too worried about it when I started getting that...I thought I had cancer or something. When I get that I see it as a sign that I should stop eating so much junk! Fibromyalgia and IBS are "linked", but you probably just have IBS with fibromyalgia symptoms (like me).

    First cut out the soda immediately it causes malabsorbition issues in everyone even those that don't live with IBS. I had to give up both soda and coffee and noticed a reduction in symptoms. I switched to breakfast tea with honey or agave syrup and almond milk. although some days I even have a reaction to tea. Taking a pro biotic every day seems to regulate my symptoms. You can keep a journal day to day logging the foods you eat and what you are doing through out the day so you can determine what exactly is triggering your symptoms. I am not a medical professional tho I was diagnosed with IBS 10 yrs ago and it no longer controls my life unless I am stressed to the max, and I truly believe you can control IBS with diet and proper supplements. I will never take medications because I believe that they mask the actual problem and only treat the symptoms.
