I am no longer able to work. Why? Cannot guess when I have to hit the bathroom. I have severe IBS. The doctor I see now finally looked at my allergies (which are getting extensive) and said You know you should be in a bubble. She meant it jokingly but serious..know what I mean?

I am from New England but live on the West Coast. I thought this would help with outdoor allergies seeing as winters are less sever here. Well I got out here in 2005 and my IBS started up then off and on. Now I am having trouble putting ANY food in me. It is either stopped up or "get out of my way" time. I have been sorting out what does and does not set me off. I had it down to white breast chicken meat, tofu, potato, and corn. Not any more. I was in 10+ pain the day before Valentines in the ER. What really sucks...I am allergic to alot of pain killers too. So for now, tofu, almond milk, ice and some flavoring (almond, vanilla..etc) is what I am drinking.

Am I sane? As sane as I can be. That is the only thing not messed up with me. I am only 42. The docs here want to give me depression or anxiety meds. I refused. That infuriated me.

Right now, I am waiting for an appointment to see if the state will pay for more allergy testing. No amount of upper or lower GI's or GI specialists have been able to fix me.

The last time I saw this new doctor, who specializes in IBS, she said this is as good as life gets. At least I know now I cannot be fixed. Now I want to know why did I get allergies and IBS?

Anyone have any ideas?

Not sure, but we've run into some similar conditions in the individuals we see in the medical setting I'm at. A lot of individuals walk in with alternating bowel habits, can't breathe, can't stomach food, purported GERD, headaches and a myriad of other symptoms only to find out they have a major issue with gluten. That's a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. It can be severe enough that it does a real job on your GI tract and it makes it appear that a person can't eat anything.

Most of the blood tests for gluten do a poor job of giving answers, and if the docs rely on just those many who do have the problem are told 'you don't have an issue with gluten.'

There's a decent test put out by Enterolab.com that can be done privately. We often use it to 'cross-check' the results on the gluten portion of the IgA/IgG tests that are run in the office - especially when we're suspicious that the IgA results came back negative because a person's total IgA count is too low for them to generate a true response.

It might be worth checking out depending upon any other symptoms you might have.
