IBS help needed!

I have been suffering from IBS for 2 years straight now. It is constant up to the point where I will have attacks throughout the day which cause severe diarrhea and cramps. It is triggered by any sort of food or drink...there have been days I have gone without nothing but water just to avoid the unbearable pain and diarrhea and still got attacks. It flares up when I lie down or sit, if there is the slightest pressure on my stomach and following slight movements. I am 20 years of age and finding this unbearable to live with. I live with my boyfriend and am attending college. I find it extremely difficult and embarrassing to deal with my illness in these situations as a result of constant trips to the bathroom and am always on edge in anticipation of an attack. I am doing my exams at the moment and have one tomorrow morning after numerous attempts at studying I have given up as a result of the pain and need to use the bathroom. I would really appreciate some help to get me through the night and through this illness as I am feeling helpless, exhausted and incapable of living my life.

See a GI doctor. There are many prescription meds that may help you. If the first drug doesn't help, keep trying until you find one that dies. In the meantime get some calcium carbonate supplements at your pharmacy and take at least 1000 milligrams a day. The calcium will firm up your stool. Also pick up a good probiotic to help balance the bacteria in your intestine. Good luck

I assume that you have seen a doc for this level of problem.

For immediate relief, you could try a hot water bottle to your tummy for the pain and take a couple sips of warm water every ten minutes for several days to two weeks and see what that does for your digestion. For nourishment, cook two tablespoons of rice with 2 cups of water over a low heat or in a crock pot for 4 to 6 hours. Season as desired. This is called "congee" and is very good for an inflamed digestive tract and diarrhea. As you improve you can mix in veggies, meat whatever you want.

Beyond that - do get a good quality probiotic (they are pricey) and consider trying an elimination diet. Even though it seems like you react to everything, There could be something in your diet that is irritating your gut, causing you to have problems with everything. Most common things are gluten, dairy, soy, eggs, corn, caffeine and alcohol. (I have heard that 30% of people with IBS have "non celiac gluten sensitivity".)

Hello, I am very sorry to hear you have been having such a hard time with this! I hope you have found some relief since you last posted. I am in college too and am only now starting to figure things out. Have you considered stress as a factor? I have found that stress is a worse trigger for me than food. The closer exams get, the worse my symptoms. I recomend talking to a dr about getting a perscription that will help. I also use an electrical heating pad nearly every day and stick to a bland brown rice diet when I am stressed. This year I went to a campus therapist regularly for stress relieving techniques and have found relaxation yoga helps. Best of luck!

Hi - my teenage son has been dealing with IBS for about 2 years as well. Everyone is different but here are some tips we discovered that helped him:

1. Not only was dairy a problem, but so are tomatos and tomato-based products! So is greasy/oily food. If you aren't already - keep a diary and track the food and your health. See if you can find anything that lines up. The GI doc should be able to run tests as well.

2. IBS is not only physical illness - but affected by your mental stress. My son was in a vicious cycle of missing school, stressing out, getting sick, missing school, getting more stressed, missing more school. He is now seeing a therapist for coping skills that helps ALOT!! I cannot stress how much learning to manage anxiety and stress has reduced his symptoms.

3. His GI changed his med to Bentyl - so far it has helped WAY more than any zantac/prilosec/etc. Maybe try it?

4. PRIOBIOTICS!! These take awhile to "kick in" but they will help lessen symptoms too.

Not only focuss on IBS also look into IBD. IBD usually occurs in women in their teen. Also, look in medications like Bentyl and check your diet. I will check in on you again.

I have seen many doctors about my problem and all have been utterly useless to the point that I actually burst into tears upon one hopeless visit. I have been asking could I see a specialist for a long time now and eventually got one doctor to do it (The others weren't bothered doing the paperwork). This doctor never sent the letter and it took me 2 months of ringing and calling at the doctors to get them to send it on. I have tried nearly everything Fiber supplements, various tablets including buscopan and colofac. I am afraid to try probiotics as they caused my symptoms to worsen before. I have been seeing a counsellor for the past few weeks and my limited sessions are now up (which did not help only made worse), I am also taking a form of Prozac since then. I can't drink much water as that makes my problems worse and any form of pressure irritates my problem. I have been eating plain rice and grilled chicken breasts for the past 2 months and that is not helping either. I have had a colonoscopy and received little results from it bar the line 'definitely IBS' from the consultant. I am really at my wits end and do not think I suffer from IBS if anyone has any suggestions as to what it might be?

IBS can be very difficult to live with. I am having one of my worst attacks at he moment, day 2 of cramping and pain, very unusual for me. It has however had me reviewing home treatments.
Number one trigger for me is stress, any stress can get things onto a bad track and once the pain start, well that only amplifies stress.
There are some treatments that have a good track record, peppermint oil has done better than many of the drugs in testing, so that is an option. Another on the probiotic front is something simple like yogurt which doesn't have lactose since he bacteria that is used to create yogurt eats all he lactose. (one has to be careful with probiotic since even too much of a good thing can throw you system off.
Being in college the stress of exams is your enemy. And most likely part of the problem. Talk to either your instructor, a councelor, or if the college has it a disability coordinator. Making arrangements to handle an attack during an exam will reduce the fear and stress of failing because suddenly you have to leave and you send the majority of the test in the restroom.
Next find a better doctor either one that specializes in women since they suffer more than men, an internal medicine, gastroeneroligist, or even a physicians assistant or nurse pratitioner. Not all doctors are created equally and sometimes your best solutions is a doctor that listens to you. My husband's doc is great for him, but a very bad fit for me because he blows me off.
