Prior to the development of modern incontinence products, what was used. Did teens and adults have to wear nappies (cloth diapers) and plastic pants like toddlers and babies?

It seems that cloth diapers were used with rubber pants but before rubber pants most adults were forced to stay in their homes because the cloth diaper would fall off while walking.
