Is there hope for me?

Hello,

I am 23 years old and have not had a period for a few years now due to being underweight. I am engaged and my fiance and I are both so excited to have children. Will it be possible for me to get pregnant without a period? I am basically wondering if there is hope for us. What methods are typically used when this is the problem?

I would truly appreciate any help.

Jessica

David K Walmer, MD, PhD responded:
Jessica, There are fertility issues and general health issues that you should be concerned about. If you have not had a period in a few years and have low estrogen levels, you could be developing osteoporosis. You could also have an underlying health issue like hypothroidism that is causing you not to have cycles. You probably won't conceive until you re-establish regular monthly ovulatory cycles but I would go to see your doctor to get evaluate for both the underlying cause of the amenorrhea (no periods) as well as your fertliity concerns. best wishes, Dr. Walmer

Hi Dr. Walmer,

I didn't even realize low estrogen levels could promote osteoporosis. Are there any other signs / symptoms of osteoporosis? Thank you for your help. I have been dreading going to see a doctor because I don't want to face any potentially bad news but now I realize it can't wait any more.
