Fertility Check up; what to expect.

blueallyn posted:
Hello I'm 29 and my husband and I have a 3 year old son. We have been trying for number two for 9mo. I've talked with my doctor about it after getting a routine check up and she recommended I start a fertility checkup/exam. Now we got pregnant as soon as we started but I miscarried at about 6wks. I haven't been able to get pregnant again (used ovulation test strips, cervical mucus, and even cervical position, I tried the temperature thing but I sucked at it). What my question is what was your first exam like and what questions should I have ready and what test should I make sure to get done?

Thanks,
I have about four days until Aunt flow shows up, so I'm hoping she won't I don't have to start these visits!!!!

I am not sure what a fertility check-up is, but working with my OB-GYN, we did a series of testing to make sure everything was okay with me. We did a pap smear, then a vagnial ultrasound just to make sure everything was good there, we got some blood work (checked my hormone levels) they did an HSG to make sure my fallopian tubes were not blocked. This is where they insert dye into the uterus to highligh the tubes, this procedure will create cramps. Which the doctor will explain prior to the test. Depending on what these tests say, will determine your next step. As for me, everything came back normal, so they ran a sperm analysis on myy husband and found that his sperm count and motility (movement) was low and could be the reason for us not becoming pregnant. So we did three rounds of clomid no success. We took a 6*7 month break to gear up for IUI (intrauterine insemination) emotionally and financially. Which our first appointment with an RE (reproductive endocronologist) is in January. With it being a male factor fertility issue, IUI with sperm washing is our best option.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much, this was extremely helpful! I will go to see my Primary doctor next week and then she will refer me to a OB-GYN that will start me on the journey. I wish you and your husband the best and hopefully the Lord will bless you with a healthy baby.

Good luck, I hope all the tests come back normal but if something is wrong that they are able to give you all the information needed in order to help you become successful. Thank you so much. We are going to need it. I have moved our appt up from Jan 12 to next wednesday Dec 21st. I couldnt wait any longer, I have been waiting long enough I needed to become proactive. And now that the appt is set, I am anxious and nervous. But either way, our journey begins in less than 4 days.

Have a great weekend and Happy Holidays

Update... So I was suppose to go back to the doctor and setup an appointment but I ended up sick with a sinus infection. I am a few days late but I'm not sure if its due to the antibiotic or pregnancy. I took a test today and I'm not really sure if its a negative or a positive it is so faint, by the end of the week if Aunt Flo hasn't shown up I'll try to test again. I hope that things with you have been going well.

Its good to hear from you again. So sorry to hear about the sinus infection. There was lady in one of these forums that went through a treatment ended up in the hospital due to an illness and was so sure that the procedure didnt work. But she ended up pregnant. So you never know. Let me know how it ends either way.

Good luck!!!

Oh my, My heart goes out to you but I truly can't explain it. I was struggling to conceive after having just one child. I thought I was doing all the right things. I was using the ovulation testing, I checked my cervical mucous, I was even checking the firmness and height of my cervix, and still no baby. Finally this month I receive a positive pregnancy test but the only thing I did different than the others 11months was not worry and like always I stayed in prayer but I asked my girlfriends to pray with me. So I hope that soon you too will get your positive and I don't know if you believe in the lord but if you allow me I can pray for you. If you arent' already you should chart your efforts and maybe you will see a pattern that you might need to change.

I am so sorry to hear that you are having issues conceiving your third child. How long did it take in order for you to conceive your two boys? With regards to infertility, 10 percent of all couples who see an infertility specialist are given a diagnosis of unexplained infertility. 1 out of 4 couples have fertitlity issues. Which can be a female factor, male factor, male and femal factor, or unexplained. But pretty much all of them, never makes anyone feel better. But it does give you a starting place. How long have you bee trying this time?

We are all hear to help you, because we have been through it or are going through it right now. You can also post your question to one of the experts and see what they say. But if, you do not feel like you are getting the answers you want from them, then maybe you should consider a second opinion.

CONGRATS!!!! On the BFP. I don't think you told me and I dont think I said anything. But if I did, I apologize for not remembering. Just so much information floating around up top, that I end up doing and writing things down twice. Have you had your first appointment yet to check the gestational period?

So happy for you!!!

HEY! So Sorry it has been a crazy week. I've worked 8 hours almost everyday for the last two weeks and I can hardly stay awake to eat dinner when I get home. I am so glad I'm changing my schedule to work twice a week lol. Yes I did get a positive and I don't think I personally told you. The day I was going to tell you the person above left a post and my heart felt that I should comment to her first. NO, I have not had an appointment. The military won't see you until your 10-12wks along. Crazy, so I will try to go to the ER or health department or try to have my primary care provider refer me to a civilian doctor! How are things with you and how is your journey, please let me know. Thank you again for caring and your encouragement.

Oh no worries, I second life being crazy. Sometimes I find myself saying or asking the same questions twice. So I have been trying to go back over the comments I leave to stop that. Why so long in the military? Well thats a good idea, to see if you can see one prior to that time frame. If you had to guess where do you think you are? Between 5-8 weeks maybe?

Journey came to screeching hault during my ultrasound. Found 10 small cysts on my right and 5 small ones on the left. She assumed I had just got off an oral contraceptive since there were so many. but they were all small (no concern). So now i am on bc to get rid of them. I have about a week and a half left before AF "should" show up. But I am taking so many pills its ridiculous trying to be in prime conception condition. But whatever I gotta do. Keep me updated on you and I will let you know when things change for me. CONGRATS again!!!!

I am not sure why the Air Force wants you to wait so long and the Army won't see me at all, lol I think I'll try the Naval Hospital and see what they will see. I believe I am 6wks so far but I won't truly know until I see the doctor and they can only give you an estimate as well.

Oh my I'm sorry to hear but I'm glad they were able to see them while they are small and no surgery is need. Was birth control the only option to shrink them or there isn't another supplement or hormone treatment you could take? Well I wish you well and pray that this will be the last obstacle you will have to hurdle to become pregnant.
