Progesterone test

Last month I had a 10 day progesterone blood test done. I was told that an 8 is ok but not optimal, so they want recheck it this month. They said that horomone level can vary so much within a couple days and even within a single day. I am tracking ovulation, but is there a way pinpoint when is the best time to have the blood draw done? Is it 10 days after the lh surge? Or is 10 days even the standard time frame?
