Higher Dosage of Clomid

My wife is on her 2nd round of Clomid at a higher dosage. How will the higher dosage help her? We've been off birth control for 2 years and should be pregnant by now. It takes most couples 4-6 months to get pregnant. The doctors have found nothing wrong with either one of us. It's extremely frustrating and depressing.

Joel Bernstien, MD responded:
The goal of clomid is to help women who are not ovulating ovulate OR to help women who are ovulating ovulate more. SO it is possible your wife's doctor(s) are trying to get her to make more than one egg and thus increase chances of conception.

That being said, if ALL testing has been normal (her ovarian function, ovulation, HSG, and your semen) then clomid alone has not been proven to be overly affective in increasing pregnancy rates. You would have what is called "unexplained" infertility.

If the above is true, you should consider talking to your doctor about a referral to a specialist for the possible addition of intrauterine insemination or other interventions.
