Joel Bernstien, MD responded:
When you are overweight, you are at much higher risk of not ovulating every month and thus not having regular periods.

Losing as little as 10% of your body weight may lead to improvement in cycle regularity and thus improved chances of conceiving. Weight loss is tough, no doubt about it. My patients tell me that Weight Watching, if done "religiously" works very well. If done correctly, your caloric intake will be 1000-1200 calories a day. I am willing to bet you are taking in more than that if you are gaining weight. Exercise in addition to this can only help.

The reason your doctor wants you to lose weight is 2 fold:

1) You are still very young in the "fertility" age. You have the luxury of time to get yourself down to a healthier weight and to try to conceive on your own.

2) Your doctor can give you medicine to ovulate and conceive, but being overweight can lead to an unhealthy and complicated pregnancy.

Best of luck. Keep your head high. Consider going all-in with Weight Watchers. Set easy goals... like 10% of your weight in 6-12 months. Who knows, you may just get pregnancy when you aren't "trying".
