I am 38 mother of an 18 and 6 year old & currently and on the pill. My husband and I would like to conceive but I need to wait till I get shoulder surgery and rehabilitate from that.
Questions: How soon after that may I get off the pill and begin trying? Second question, do I need to do a detox of all the meds I'm on as well due to pain and imflammation...etc?? Also, does having cysts on my ovaries affect the chances or eggs?
Thank you!

Dear Shalom007, Typically the meds that you take for surgery will clear your system pretty quickly. It is probably important for you to decide how important another child is in your life. There is a natural age-related decline in fertility and moms who didn't have trouble once upon a time, frequently just assume that it will still be easy 6 or so years later. Your fertility doesn't disappear like a canoe going over a waterfall but if you aren't intentional, time passes and the first thing you know, you are keeping someone like me in business. The average age that people come in because of age factors is about 35 years of age. If having another child is very important, I would schedule your shoulder surgery asap and simultaneously go to your ob/gyn and ask for some testing of your ovarian reserve. (AMH level, day 2-4 FSH and estradiol). That will at least give you some ballpark information about how much of a resource you might have if things don't happen quickly when you start trying. He/she can also assess your cycles and ovaries for cysts, etc. Good luck with your decision!

Thank you Dr. Walmer for your reply. I grately appreciate it. The shoulder injury is work related, therefore, I am dealing with worker's comp and at their mercy so to speak. We are still waiting for the surgery to be approved and have recently acquired an attorney to move this along hopefully. It has nearly been a year since my injury and it has been a long and painful and stressful road in every regard with WC. If it were up to me, I would have started trying to conceive a long time ago. It is in God's hands for me, may I have His favor.
Question: I do have cysts on my ovaries what does that mean? Does it affect my chances/how? Thank you!
