I have been craving a spicy itallian sub from subway for the past week and it's not going any where. I am so afraid of listeria, I heard that it's rare but when I was on the 1st tri board a lady posted that her sister lost her child from listeria. I loathe toasted subs and/or warm lunchmeat. I'm wondering how many of you out there still eat lunchmeat without zapping it first.

Take the Poll

Would you eat a cold lunchmeat sandwich if you were craving it knowing that it could POSSIBLY harm your LO?
  • Yes....listeria is so rare that it doesn't really scare me
  • No... Absolutely not, it may harm my LO
  • I probably would if the craving wasn't going away
  • What is listeria?
  • I have always hated lunchmeat so this is no biggie

I try to heat lunchmeat...I'm not *quite* as careful about it as the response suggests, but I try to avoid things that can carry listeria. It's unlikely, but...not worth the risk to me.

I do eat feta cheese sometimes. The USDA and CDC say not to eat soft cheeses unless they're clearly labeled as being made with pasteurized milk...so I just read the labels and make sure they were. However, I've seen other sources (not official ones) that suggest they can become re-contaminated, so I am on the fence about it right now.

Anyway. Long answer to a simple question. I am careful with lunchmeat and other definite sources that can carry listeria, but not as careful with less certain ones.

I have only had heated lunchmeat since I have been pregnant. When I go to Subway or wherever I usually just get turkey and ask to have it toasted. I am SO with you though - the spicy italian is my favorite! And I don't want it hot! I told DH, when I am recovering with baby this is one of his first assignments. To go get my lunch or dinner one day from Subway and get me a COLD spicy italian sub. YUM!!!
