I just had an mri done on my lower back and it had showed a 2 cm probable cyst at the lower pole of the left kidney. Can anyone help me understand this? I have a lot of pain in my lower left side for about three years now that has been steadily getting worse and now I am wandering if it could be from this cyst. Please help

Can anyone help me understand this? I have a lot of pain in my lower left side for about three years now that has been steadily getting worse and now I am wandering if it could be from this cyst. Please help

The vast majority of renal cysts are 'simple', meaning benign (as opposed to 'complex cysts'), and it's generally best to leave them alone since taking it out is far riskier.

At 2cm, it is an unlikely cause for the pain; not an impossible source for pain, but very unlikely.

I'd bet that the doc suggests leaving it alone, and rechecking it in 6 months or a year; if it has not changed rapidly in size over that span of time, then it is probably not going anywhere dangerous and isn't worth removing.

However, just like Thurd11, my pain has gotten worse . To me, this is too much of a coincidence. Should I have another ultrsound performed to determine if it has grown? And what should I do if it has grown significantly?

Obviously no one on the internet can offer any specific medical advice. But if you want to look into it farther, then you might consult a urologist, since that is probably the specialty that would need to remove the cyst if it ever came to that.

If a urologist agrees that the pain is probably coming from another source, then you may need to seek out a neurologist or a pain management specialist.
