hello i am 59 13 years ago i was told i had two cysts on my right kidney. they were the type that would never do anything. after finding out a family member has cancer of kidney i went back and pulled my records from another state. in reading to take the cysts size and answer to my currant Dr., i found another paper that bothered me. it stated my cysts were not cysts but two masses in the right kidney. i was angry and this week will have a ultrasound. how could this happen and what am i looking at? i have some pain on my right side. the letter also stated i should have had a MRI> how was this missed why was i not informed they were masses and not cysts (the words not cysts were underlined) after 13 years i am worried. any thoughts? suggestions?

It might be due to the difference in the technology from a while back and today; imaging techniques are constantly getting better and better over time, so maybe the newer ultrasound showed more definite results that the older one did.

Probably the only way to be sure is to follow up with a different method like CT or MRI (as was recommended previously).

There are a number of different types of renal masses that are non-malignant. So it might also be that there are small vascular or fatty lesions on the kidney that are not cysts but also are not cancerous. You have to follow up with your local doc and probably get some additional testing done to know once and for all.
