My 80 yr old mother has Congestive Heart Failure, diabetes and chronic kidney failure. Last week during a hospital stay, she started dialysis and will continue with it. She came home and ate chicken with salty seasoning. Can this affect her dialysis? She returned to the ER last night because she could not urinate. What would cause that?
First off, because her kidneys are not working, she needs to avoid salt. Too high a level which can build up can affect her heart even more.
When you say she could not urinate, did you mean that she could not void her bladder? Or did you mean that she did not produce any urine? Not producing urine is part of having kidney failure. The organs do not work and therefore do not produce urine. If she can't void, that is a different issue adn could be due to several things including diabetes (nerve damage).
Has she spoken with a renal dietitian? There will be certain dietary restrictions now that she is on dialysis and these must be followed or she could be in significant danger.
One more note regarding seasoning food: if you are trying to cut down on salt, most 'salt substitutes' are NOT the way to go. Most salt substitutes just swap out sodium chloride for potassium chloride, and a lot, if not most, renal patients have trouble excreting excess potassium. Potassium has a very narrow range of safe values in the human body, and levels that are too high (or extremely low) can affect the heart.
Just be careful when buying things to use in the kitchen. Just because it says "low sodium" on the label does not automatically make it safe.
