    Exciting News for WebMD Members!

We've been busy behind the scenes building new message boards for you. You'll have new and easier ways to find messages, connect with others, and share your stories.

And, this will all be available on your smartphone or other mobile device!

What Do You Need to Do?

The message board you're used to will be closing in the coming weeks. While many of your boards will be making the move to our new home, your posts will not. Want to keep a discussion going? Save posts you want to continue (this includes your member profile story), so that you can re-post them in the new message boards.

Keep an eye here and on your email inbox, we'll be back in touch soon to give you all the information you need!

My mother is 81 and has been in stage four for 3 1/2 years. She needs to have a knee replacement but her nephrologist doesn't sound very encouraging. He says it is up to her but the anesthesia could make her worse. Has anyone dealt with this? Thanks for any comments.

Some of it does depend on luck. I had a couple of anasthetics while in that stage of kidney disease. They were very careful to keep me hydrated before and after and I had no effects on my kidneys. But it can happen. So you Mom will have to decide if the comfort from the knee replacement is worth the risk of maybe being pushed onto dialysis. Has she made plans already? It might be the time to decide what to do, just in case.

She is pretty stubborn and says she will not go on dialysis. We did look into the home dialysis. Thanks for your response.
