I just had the same outcome from an ultrasound I had done a week ago and my urologist just ordered a CTScan. The outer rim of my kidney is also dilated. I do have a lot of pain on my right side going around my back.

Have you gotten the results of your CTScan? Just curious?

Thanks,

In most cases this indicates that there is an obstruction to the free flow of urine somewhere in the tract and urine has backed up into the kidney creating pressure and causing the kidney itself to expand or enlarge.

What we don't yet know is if the obstruction is still present or if it is gone and the expanded kidney is OK, just sort of 'stretched' out of shape. Since the ultrasound did not report hydronephrosis, it might be that the backed up urine that was expanding the kidney isn't there any more, and the problem doesn't need a lot of attention at this point. But there just isn't really enough detail to be sure.

I understand this problem better than I would like too. When I have swelling it usually means that I have kidney stones. I get small sand size stones caused by high levels of Uric Acid. My CT scan just showed that my stones are gone but I am still a little swollen in my kidneys.

If you have a good urologist you will be fine. the next step is a scope so that he or she can look into your urinary track. This has become a regular part of my life and I have learned to live with it. Its not bad just very inconvinient.
