I thought that my knees could not be affected by RA after total replacement surgery!

I had bi-lateral total knee replacement surgery three years ago. I was told that a benefit of the surgery was that I no longer had knee joints that would be affected by RA. I recently experienced the first major flare I have had since the surgery. Several major joints were affected including both knees. I felt like I had vise around them and they were both inflammed. How can this happen when I have artificial joints and no longer have synovial tissue?
