still bound to a walker after replacement and manipulation almost 1 year after original surgery

Had left knee done in special teaching hospital 2008 due to the complexity of the AVN in upper and lower bones of the knee requiring "cement" and muscle tear and ligament tear correction. After 6 weeks and my own physical therapy, able to put full weight on leg, but wear a brace for sometimes popping in and out (painful, but able to live with).

Had right knee done in local town using notes from 2008 surgery. After almost 1 year and a recent knee manipulation still cannot put full and barely partial weight bearing on right knee or straighten more than about a "5". Surgery was much more painful than left knee and believe it to be too large, looks much larger than other knee and this is not from swelling. Most of the swelling is behind the knee and to the inner side. Used walker and only able to "tip toe" walk with walker with home health physical therapy. Finally, after about 7 months, had manipulation to try to straighten and it seemed to work for a couple weeks after which time I had gone through grueling physical therapy, stuck with it, then "popped" back out somewhat again and went from a "2" straightening back to a "5" and knee bends back to the inside of the knee, pain is worse. Physical Therapist felt the "out of placement" and contacted doctor. Went for visit, seemed to think I was "improving" which I suppose I have since the original surgery, but can not put full and barely partial weight bearing on knee and must use walker or will fall.

Don't know what to do at this point, am asking for another opinion, but am told that most docs don't want to touch another doc's work and have not received a referral after a week yet.

I know the AVN is in my hips which are constant pain as well, but will not deal with that until right knee is able to handle weight bearing again.

Any suggestions? Has anyone ever had a replacement that was too "large" or such set backs with weight bearing and pain. I would like to hear from anyone who has had similar problems or any problems that may be able to help me to know what to speak to the doctor about. I know I need to be more assertive or aggressive with the current doctor, but can't even get them to do post op x-rays and show me anything.

I look forward to any comments and/or knowledge.

Some Ortho Surgeons are better at revisions than others. Do your homework, and you will find one that does that type of surgery.

I had a TKR in 2006. I had some trouble with the tendon but the doctor sent me to PT, and that helped to stretch the tendon out so it did not feel so tight. Before the PT, the knee felt too big but the doctor told me it was the tendon and not the orthotic knee. He was right.

Best wishes that you find a doctor who will help you.

I had TKR surgery Jan 2010. Manipulation 5-2010. I am still haveing pain, stiffness, daily exercise 2x per day at home, 3x week at PT. Dr. told me I had a genetic prone to tissue scarring. I m thinking of hving a second opinion.

My Physical Therapist said I had lots of scarring tissue and I could hear it breaking up when she pushed on my leg (brought me to tears). This is also one reason I'm getting a 2nd opinion, think it's a good for you too.

I found that massage therapy (not nearly as pleasant as it sounds) as well as a PT who liked doing deep tissue release were keys to my progress after the manipulation. I also invested in one of those wooden roller massagers so I could do some tissue massage on myself. Heat before sessions helped a lot as well. I am now 10 months out, have a ROM pf 0 to 125 and continue to improve. I fought for every single degree. Above all, don't give up.

Best of luck for your continued healing.

Thank you for your reply. I am doing my own PT now, they didn't want to do any more after the setback, but doc says I am doing better, but still the knee wants to fall to the inside at times so have to use walker or 4 prong cane, don't like to fall in public.

I will try toe roller massagers, and I still walk and do my other exercises every day. I am not a quitter, thanks again, it's nice to know I'm not the only one with problems.
Best of Luck to you too!

Hello, sorry to hear about your bad surgery. It seems like that is what happen to you.i have a knee replacement done about 3 years ago and it,s doing fine.before i went into surgery i got myself in tip top share. It seems to have helped my recovery. The other thing that i want to ask you is did they have you on one of those knee bending machine?I was on one of those and i think it really help for the first two weeks after surgery.I plan on going into surgery again on my other knee but first i need to lose some weight and get myself back in shape.Weight has a lot to do with recovery on these knee replacements, and it,s really not a good ideal to become largely over weight afterwards also. You might want to get another exaime and see if they can replace the knees that you have now.Good luck to you
