I tried one years ago for OA of the lateral compartment of my knee. It was custom fit but even with that it cumbersome, hot, uncomfortable and the pressure points caused sores on my leg. It gave me a minimum amount of relief from knee pain but it was only temporary. The total uncomfortableness of the brace was not worth what little good it did me. Eventually I had a partial knee replacement which worked great.

I have been using one of these for 6 months now. It can cause some skin irritation where it rubs. This can be virtually eliminated by wearing something between the brace and your skin (it's like a ace bandage sock that's been cut to slip over your leg - your doctor can usually provide one for you or show you what it looks like).

The brace is completely custom fit to your knee. They do all kinds of measurements and special order it (at least with my brand they did so I had to wait about 10 days for it to arrive). In my case it helps so I put up with any minor effects (warmer than normal, clunky thing on your leg).

I would say, if you are in pain this is worth a try. It helps take the weight off of the area and by doing so reduces your pain. As with all things your experience may differ. I wish you luck!
