Lung Cancer at 73

My mother was diagnosed with lung cancer 2 years ago. She was losing a lot of weight and decided to find out why and they found cancer. She had a large tumor on her left lung. They went in and removed the upper left lung and tons of nodules. She still has the lower small left lung. She did one dose of chemo and it nearly killed her. She couldn't go on and have any more chemo.
My mother has been complaining of pain in her chest going through to her back. Pain that keeps her in bed because she can't move. Then she also realized that she is losing a lot of weight again. I told her tomorrow to call her oncologist and get an appt. immediately. If there is something maybe they can catch it right away. She is scared to death. Afraid she has cancer again possible in the lower half of the left lung and said she will not have any chemo again. She just can't do it.
Any ideas?

Hi --
I know how worried and concerned you must feel regarding your Mom's current situation. Unfortunately, lung cancer that has not been treated effectively has a great chance of not only recurring, but can also spread to other areas of the body outside the lungs.
From the description of the symptoms your Mom is experiencing, it is possible that the cancer has spread -- possibly to the other lung and likely to the bone (pain in her back).
Only an exam and further diagnostic testing by her oncologist can confirm this and I would recommend that she be seen as soon as possible.
If she can not tolerate chemotherapy and does not wish to try another cycle, there are other options that can help her maintain a more comfortable life --although it would not be possible to slow down or halt the progression of her disease.
I urge you to discuss options with your Mom's doctors and other family members who may be available to provide her additional support (and for you as well!)

The doc wants her to be in a trial for a new medication or do chemo therapy. She does not want chemo as she has seen several of her friends having it -- a last resort she says. Any words of wisdom? Thx!!

My mom was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in her left lung in 2007. After Chemo, Radiation and PCI treatment she lived nearly another 4 years cancer free. During those 4 years she saw her oldest grandchild graduate from highschool and 3 others followed, she saw first communions, confirmations, grandchildren head to college, children celebrate a 20th wedding anniversary, a family reunion and so much more.
She was just diagnosed two weeks ago with a rare occurance of small cell lung cancer in her left lung again, just below the initial cancer mass. She has chosen to go through the treatments again, she wants to see her other grandchildren graduate from highschool, maybe a marriage or even a great grandbaby...... Prayers and persistence were her key to success.

I am 73 years old and had breast cancer in 1998, lung cancer in the left lung and did radiation and chemo 2008, then 2010 had the cancer in my right lung and a tumor on my kidney, I am going through with chemo and do not have hardly any problems you can always try, and then stop it you get too sick. I have never been really sick. So talk to your doctor about it and then make up your mind and go with your Mom so you can help her understand what the doctor is talking about.

Right now I just had my cat scan done, and the tumor on the kidney has shrunk but the one in the right lung has more fluid in it and has not shrunk at all. The chemo that I was taking had not made me sick at all. I did lose some weight but I could afford to. I believe that they will change the kind of chemo that I am taking right now.
