My doctor found a spot on my lung today when doing an X-ray of my neck. He was concerned enough to order a consult for a CT scan. I'm a 100% disabled veteran and recieve all my healthcare at the VA. Contrary to what they would have the public believe, the VA has poor healthcare treatment for us veterans and as far as I know they won't approve treatment anywhere except at their facilities. It could take weeks or even months to get the CT scan done and who knows how long after that to begin recieved any form of treatment. I'm a former smoker and have had major exposure to asbestos dust on several occasions dating back as far as 30 years and again as recent as 3 years ago. I'm all alone and scared bigtime that I may die before I turn 50. I just want to know, if it turns out to be lung cancer how bad will it be and if it's in an early stage, but I can't get early or proper treatment how long do I have?

God bless you. Cannot believe it would take that much time for an ordinary CT. Can you check with one of the vets serving organizations they should be able to push it. At this point things may turn out with the best possible outcome - NED, no evidence of disease. I will pray that this be so.

Have you actually gotten a date for your CT scan that's weeks or months away or are you assuming it will take that long?

I had an x-ray and ct scan for another problem also. Two doctors said they were certain i had lung cancer and it was inoperable, but wanted to do a biopsy to determine the type of cancer. I refused the biopsoy.

I asked for anti-biotics to get rid of the bronchitis symptoms and they said they would do another ct scan in 6 weeks. I have been taking natural supplements and praying a lot. I am pretty sure I won't use chemo or radiation if I do have cancer.

Good luck. There must be a way to get a scan right away other than the emergency room.

I was a long term smoker and quit 3 years ago. I am 69.

I understand exactly how you feel! I have small cell lung cancer and am in treatment. A CT scan, followed by a biopsy, started my treatment schedule. I am about to have my third PETscan, which tells the oncologists everything about my condition.

My number one advice for anyone with cancer is to have a tough attitude. It means everything toward your healing! Have faith; eat the very best diet to help your body fight, allow friends to help you along the way - don't be proud, be thankful for their assistance; the Cancer Society is extremely helpful with books, classes, etc. Please remember to be forceful about getting treatment. "No" is NOT in your vocabulary! Be nice but be forceful. You must get treatment as quickly as possible.

I commend you for coming here for help. I will watch this site for further information from you. I would be happy to share anything I can.

I will say, I quit smoking 27 years ago. Was smoking the cause for my cancer? Good question. No answer. Besides, who cares..not I...I do care that I am doing everything possible to follow my doctors' instructions, and keeping a good attitude. I like to tell people I'm "terrier tough" which helps me to go forward. i refuse to let this beat me...I will beat it.

My prayers will include you from now on.

Hello, I just read what you posted and it says it was one month ago so now I am wondering how you are doing? I do know that I have several times heard how healthcare at the VA was, horrible. I just don't understand that at all. I found out I had a nodule on my lung during a chest xray. I was told I would need to get a CT scan. I am currently unemployed and I do not have any insurance. I went to the county hospital for my CT. The doctor seemed as if she could care less. I was told that yes there was a nodule on my lung and I should get abother CT in about a year or 6 mos. I am scared and I do not want my family to

You have the rest of your life Eric. Don't hang out alone anymore! Get involved with a couple of local vets and cancer groups. Immerman angels will get you an email buddy that is a survivor. I love the keys. I hope they have you treated and healing by now! You hopefully have a lot to offer others now! 1 year after my diagnosis, I started a non-profit 12 step room. Many are helped because I had a very scary life event. Look for your nitch and dig in and do some work for others, it distracts me very well from worries of re-occurances!
