small cell lung cancer

choyne posted:
I was diagnosed with extensive small cell lung cancer in Nov. 2010. I had both chemo and radiation and for a while things were better. Lately, symptoms have worsened. I have a very loving family and both them and I would like to know what to expect when the end of the road nears. Can anyone answer the question as to what symptoms/conditions were present when their loved ones were in the last month of their lives?
Thank you so much.

First of all I want to say I'm so sorry you have this, our doctor said it was the fastest growing cancer there is because it throughs out the small tumors all over the body.

My husband passed on May 3, 2011 from small cell lung cancer. It takes you so fast, he had been on oxgyen for several months but he could still get up, walk around and eat. The last few weeks he started swelling because his kidneys weren't working right. By the end he was swollen so much his skin was weaping liquid. He was tired and started sleeping alot but he still knew things and people right to the end.
The day he passed he sat at the kitchen table and got a sponge bath in the morning then got so tired he had to lay down he didn't know much after that and he passed at 9:00 that night. We had Hospice and he got to be at home with all his family with him.

My husband was told about the small cell cancer when it was just 3 cinameters, very small. He was put on a redgument of different chemotherapy treaments and lived 7 months. By the end he had cancer cells all over including many in his brain, they couldn't stop the spread. He was told on Aug. 18, 2010 and passed May 3, 2011. My prayers are with you

I forgot to say because of the chemo kept killing his red blood cells he had to have blood transfussions every 2 weeks and sometimes even the platlets also. that really perked him up afterwards, till the next treatment. It was a cycle.

Also a couple weeks before he passed he wasn't very hungry or thirsty. The nurse said it was a natural way his body was preparing itself to die. When he passed there wasn't any mess in his bed, like you hear about of people who die suddenly.
I hope I helped you some.

So sorry to hear about your husband but thank you so much for sharing the information. I was originally told I had small cell on October 26th,2010 and a biopsy on Nov 6th 2010, which confirmed the diagnosis. The chemo and radiation seems to have stemmed the growths for a while, but lately I"m feeling a lot worse. I had a bunch of tests as I was in the hospital for 3 days because my breathing got so bad, but they said it was just a bit of liquid in the lungs.
So again, thank you so much for your information

I'm glad to hear you have held it off for almost a year, thats very good. They couldn't give my husband radiation because of where the tumor was at. It was just outside the opening to the airway. Radiation would have killed part of his airway. Then he would have had even a harder time breathing. For several months he slept in his recliner cause he couldn't breath laying down. He really just slept for short times 24/7 we started having someone awake sit with him all the time, he didn't want to be alone. Because it was harded to get air in his lungs the concentrator had to be raised to 5
My prayers are with you
