Father with Lung Cancer

My father was diagnosed a few weeks ago with lung cancer. He is a heavy smoker. I am starting to worry because in the last 4 years, 3 of my family members were diagnosed with lung cancer. Two of them have since passed away. My grandparents had COPD, emphysema...etc.. They all smoked; I have never smoked. Does your lung cancer risk increase based on genetics? All of my family members that got sick....smoked. I am not sure if this is the main cause or there could be something else. Any advice would be great.

The risk factor all your relatives had was that they all were tobacco abusers.

That's the important factor here, not genetics.

Thank you Gail for your response. I am so upset my dad has lung cancer. My house growing up, was a smoker's house. My parents and grandparents who lived in the house all smoked inside the house with us kids. My first job was working in an office where employees were allowed to smoke inside the building. I have definitely had my share of secondhand smoke. Now I am married and my husband smokes (not inside the house). He has tried to quit, but always seems to start up again a few months later. I pray one day that he will be able to overcome it. I don't want to see another one of my loved ones die from cigarettes.
