My father has been battling Stage 3 Small-Cell Lung Cancer since October 2011. I live 2500 miles away from him. I did go spend Christmas with him and I am planning to go spend more time with him soon. We just found out the cancer has spread to his brain. I don't have a lot of money and I have a job and small children. My question is how do I know when the right time to go be with him is? With plane tickets the way they are I can't just purchase a ticket last minute. But, I don't want to miss spending time with him when he passes. I love him and it kills me being so far away. Any advice on what the normal prognosis is for someone who has cancer that has spread to the brain is. Thank you.

I am sorry to hear about your dad. I do not know the answers to your question about your dad other than I am sure it is different for everyone. Have you spoken to your dad about what his doctors are telling him? Hopefully you have a family member who sees him regularly and can judge this to give you time to plan. My dad too was recently diagnosed with lung cancer. I am sure your dad knows how much you love him and want to be near him. Best wishes and sending warm thoughts to you and your family.
