Why did my mom get Lung Cancer??

My mom was diagnosed with lung cancer last year at age 72. This was so shocking to our family. She has never smoked in her life. She didn't have much exposure to second hand smoke either, and she's never lived in a place where there was Radon Gas. We are all wondering how she got it? She didn't want to tell her family or friends, she tried to keep it from us. She didn't want treatment, didn't try at all. She ended up passing away 14 months later. The cancer had travelled to her hip, adrenal glands, and then at the end, her brain. We are all devastated and can't understand why my mom went through all this on her own without talking to or discussing it with her family. Maybe there was something we could have said to her that would get her to try chemo or radiation, and maybe she could have lived. Does anyone out there have any ideas as to what she may have been thinking?? It would be appreciated.
