Had my first chemo treatment today and so far have had no nausea, just a really bad headache. Just wondering if that is normal. Also I can't sleep. Can anyone tell me if they had the same reaction to chemo?

Hi, I haven't had my first treatment yet. From what I've read think that's pretty normal. I am waiting for an appt with my new Oncologist (other one didn't like to return calls). There doesn't seem to be alot of activity on this message board, I also have fibromyalgia and there is people on that board all the time. What kind of cancer do you have? I have adenocarcinoma T2 N0 M0. Glad your not getting thre nausea.

Hi there--had my second treatment today and evidently the headache and sleeplessness is caused by the steriods, so it's a pretty normal reaction. This is all so new I don't know what to expect from each treatment. When do you start your treatments? Mine are for small cell lung cancer. Three treatments then off for 3 weeks, then 3 more treatments, off 3 weeks then radiation and chemo for another 6 weeks. Still no nausea, which blows my mind. That is what I was dreading the most about chemo. Hope you do well with your treatments when they start. Thanks for responding.

I'm going to see a new oncologist on Monday and will decide when we will start. Hope I am lucky and don't have the nausea. Tomorrow I am going to a seminar on lung cancer maybe I will learn more.

I have stage 3B nonsmall cell lung cancer. Chemo was not as bad for me as it could have been. Most severe nausea will come in the middle of treatment. The anti-nausea drug Zofran worked good for me and I used Benedryl to help me sleep.

I've had 2 - 3 week on, 1 week off - courses chemo as of this week for NSCLC. I've been incredibly lucky - other than some hair thinning - no side effects and blood work is all good

I have another PET scan today. In my gut, I'm not expecting good news, but guess we'll see. I can just feel it though,,,

Hey Housemouse22:

When I was going through chemo, I had to take steroids the day before, the day of, and the day after chemo -- those usually jacked me up pretty well. I usually had my chemo on Thursdays and then on Sundays, I would go to morning church service and come home and sleep the rest of the day.

My husband would wake me up for lunch and supper and let me sleep the rest of the day. My doctor also gave me Xanax to take the "edge off" and help my mind shut down so I could sleep when I was going through the radiation part -- I don't like prescription sleeping pills because I usually wake up feeling "hung over".... so you might want to ask your Dr. if you can take Xanax -- it just quiets you down enough that you can sleep without the icky morning feeling.

Good luck! March 26, 2009 was my last chemo treatment! Hurrah! It has been just over 1 year!

I had chemo twice, a first initial round upon discovery of leukemia and a second following radiation to prepare me for a stem cell stransplant. Neither time did I suffer nausea, but I was on a steady supply of Ativan. The Ativan did help me sleep in combination with an allergy medication such as Benedryl to help with the itchy eyes and neutopenic (sp??) tendancy to have a runny nose.

Try strecthing on a regular basis the last hour before bed. Nothing too aggressive like yoga necessarily, but on a regular basis for your circulation and long term comfort. Be sure to maintain a healthy amount of food in your diet because you are sustaining a battle inside yourself and need to keep the energy for that and for yourself as well.

Today is my 2 yr anniversary for my transplant and I am a firm believer in rest and nutrition playing the most important roll in my recovery. Make sure you find a way to get sleep by making it a priority to communicate with your doctors.

My husband takes Cisplatin and Etoposide (3days on and 3weeks off. He just finished his 4th round today. Now in 3 weeks we go for his PETscan to assess where we are. He also has aggressive 15days in a row 2 times a day radiation for his small cell lung cancer. The anti nausea cocktail prior to administering the chemo really helps keep the upset tummy at bay. He lost all his hair after the 1st round and his hair has already started growing back!! Everyone handles their "cocktails" differently based on what they give you. Hang in there, keep a positive attitude. And try to eat alot of protein, fruit and veggies. (even when you don't think you can eat a bite, try.,.... Also, a Unisom sleeping pill at night helps my husband, but the chemo makes him very fatiqued so he sleeps alot during the day - like I said - everyone is different, Good Luck and God Bless you as you go thru your experience.
