Sound like Lupus?
casey_al posted:
I have had the butterfly rash on my face for about 1 year now. It started getting worse a couple of months ago and I just thought it was my complexion. Last week, I started getting pain in my right foot and it progressed quickly. By Friday, I couldn't stand or even walk on it. It is swollen, hot to the touch and sensitive to touch. I went to the dr, they did an x ray and said no broken bones and to walk in a boot for two weeks just in case. It's located below the big toe and swollen all over. The pain is horrible, it wakes me at night and doesn't go away with the 3 advil I was told to take. I also ice it and elevate like I was told, and the swelling doesn't go down. I also have this overall tired feeling and have for the last several months. After I adding all my symptoms up, a friend told me about lupus. Did anyone start out with these symptoms? Thanks in advance for your help!

There is no single blood test for diagnosing lupus. Systemic Lupus Erythematosis (SLE) is diagnosed using 11 criteria. IF you have 4 out of 11 it is likely you have lupus.

  • Face rash, which doctors call a malar rash, that is butterfly shaped and covers the bridge of the nose and spreads across the cheeks
  • Scaly rash, called a discoid rash, which appears as raised, scaly patches
  • Sun-related rash, which appears after exposure to sunlight
  • Mouth sores, which are usually painless
  • Joint pain and swelling that occurs in two or more joints
  • Swelling of the linings around the lungs or the heart
  • Kidney disease
  • A neurological disorder, such as seizures or psychosis
  • Low blood counts, such as low red blood count, low platelet count (thrombocytopenia), or a low white cell count (leukopenia)
  • Positive antinuclear antibody tests, which indicate that you may have an autoimmune disease
  • Other positive blood tests that may indicate an autoimmune disease, such as a positive double-stranded anti-DNA test, positive anti-Sm test, positive anti-phospholipid antibody test or false-positive syphilis test

I did have a rash but it was on my back so I couldn't really see it but I could feel it. It took 3 to 6 months to get rid of it. Now I've been having severe pain under my left breast in the rib cage area for 4 to 6 months. I just recently connected the two symtoms. I also have swollen fingers in my joint area. I'm in so much pain. My upper body is shaking and I'm trying to get an appt with a rheumotologist. Last year I was hospitalized because I was having involuntary movement of my arm and they didn't know if it was stroke related. I was glad to see this post today because I've been a little depressed not knowing what to do. I have at least 4 symtoms off the symtoms list for lupus. I had the blood test and the result wasn't positive but it wasn't negative either. Hopefully next week I'll have an appt to Rheumotologist. OTC meds doesn't do much and my neurology meds doesn't stop the pain.

It kind of sounds like gout. I never started with those symptoms (I started with photosensitivity and rashes, but everyone is different). You can always ask your doctor to run an ANA test.
Hope you feel better soon, Julie
