Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome
avatar
R Swamy Venuturupalli, MD, FACR posted:
All Lupus patients are at risk to get antiphospholipid antibody syndrome. There are few warning symptoms in this disease and about 30 to 40% of all Lupus patients have antiphospholipid antibodies out of which one third develop complications.

It acts as an anticoagulant, in turn leading to blood clots, strokes, heart attacks, miscarriages. This blood clotting can also effect the lung in a complication known as pulmonary embolism which needs to be checked for in every Lupus patient.

If you have it, you should be taking precautionary measures by taking one baby aspirin per day.

Anti-malarials can also be used to prevent clotting and avoiding certain activities and diets may help with prevention.

I unfortunately have the Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome with my Lupus which has lead me to six PE's and a miscarriage in my 9th month of pregnancy. I have been blessed to not be worse off. I had a greenfield filter placed fours years ago due to the number of clots. However, I think before getting pregnant it is wise to ask for the testing because it seems to become more aggressive during pregnancy. I don't want anyone experiencing what I did with my son!

Wow, you have had 6 PEs? Here I am thinking that my 2 PE's was alot. I too have the Filter as well. I am glad you shared your story to help others. Does anyone else in your family have it? My Grandfather died at 52 from a Blood Clot of the Heart and 3 of my relatives passed from SLE. My Cousin and her two daughters. Although they didn't have the Anticoagulant type of Lupus, they did have Lupus.
