I have a low morphology of 4-5% and we are heading for IVF. I wanted to know if men can still get women pregnant even if this value is as low as I describe. The other results from the semen tests are fairly good just morphology...All the tests for my wife are good so my conclusion is its me. We have been trying for 2 and a half years..any advice or exsperineces similar which give us hope I would love to hear as its a very emotional time for both of us...

Strict morphology is a very stringent test that has created a lot of controversy in the fertility world since lab technicians lack the proper training for this test. You will encounter doctors that focus highly on this parameter while others give it little value for natural conception.

Have you look into ways to improve your morphology? Was a full lifestyle and medical history reviewed for you with your fertility doctor or did you get a referral to an urologist to address this issue? If your wife has no fertility problems you should focus on fixing the low morphology with hopes that natural conception will work instead of just jumping right to IVF. Focus on the problem, the low morphology, and ways to improve.

No pregnancies after 2 years is concerning and IVF is likely a good option for achieving the pregnancy but I just don't feel that your morphology alone is the cause to no pregnancy.

In accordance with the World Health Organization (WHO) manual for the examination and processing of human semen 5th edition sets the lower reference limit for normal forms at 4% with 3-4% still being acceptable. This means in a population of men with known fertility 5% of the populations has a 3-4% normal forms while 95% fall in the 4% or higher range.

As an Andrologist I've seen plenty of men with morphology in the 2-4% normal range have no problems conceiving naturally with their wife. I still recommend a fertility blended vitamin for men and review a sperm healthy lifestyle to make sure daily chemical or other exposures are not the cause to the poor morphology. It can often be a simple lifestyle change to improve your sperm quality. If you have chemical or heat exposures at work this is hard to change but making sure to use proper protection from the chemicals and limiting heat exposure will be helpful.

Best of luck!

Hi amy,

thank you for your reply as at least i don't feel too abnormal as these things tend to do. You mentioned "fertility blended vitamin" is there one which is recommended and also a sperm heathly lifestyle? I don't realy drink much, don't smoke, do regular exercise, eat well but i am type 1 diabete for 8 years now but have well controlled sugars. If there is something which you can suggest then please I am all ears Thnaks again for your input....
