    Nude Swimming Teams
    Alexco35 posted:
Hey guys I was wondering, I recently ran across an article that said in the 30's, 40's, and 50's the High School Swim teams for boys used to be nude... is this true.. did any of you ever see or experience this? its hard to believe parents would allow their kids to be in an all male nude team?? even the coaches were nude? wow what a different world we live in..

I am too young to have been involved in this or had a chance to enjoy the nude cammeraderie with other guys but will tell you that there is a Yahoo Group about YMCA Nudity that I came across showing lots of photos of those days with the boys nude in the pool area. I think if we were all raised that way, nudity wouldn't be such a huge deal for so many.

Even I am too young to remember any swim teams being nude. My high school in the late sixties had swim teams with suits. Now my father talked about having swimming in school were all the guys were nude. I agree with Greg that this society has too many hang ups with nudity.
    goingcommando replied to Ramases's response:
Well, I'm in my late 60's and grew up in the 40's and 50's. Our swim teams did not compete in the nude, but we did swim naked in PE classes in high school and shower rooms were open with no private stalls. It made a lot of sense since a swim suit was one less thing to dry. We had to shower before entering the pool which kept the pool clean. At Boy Scout camp we also swam naked ad showered outside. In fact, the showers were a distance from the cabins and we walked nude down the hill to the outdoor showers. No one thought anything about it. It saved time and one only carried soap, no towel, since the walk back to the cabin took care of the drying. Some guys were fully developed, others were in the middle of puberty, and others were just beginning. I don't remember any embarrassment or ridicule. Things were much more normal in those days. There was a lot of cross-age group and cross generational help. I am from a large family of boys (8) and the older brothers helped the younger ones in a lot of ways. Our dad instructed the older boys in matters of male issues and those brother instructed the younger ones on down the line. Our dad didn't have time to teach each boy individually. It was expected that if you were a younger brother you would learn the ropes from your older brother.

Over the years, I've noticed that the generations of my children and grandchildren are more skittish about be naked in gym locker rooms. It's kind of funny to me but I understand that they have grown up in a different kind of environment which has been greatly influenced by the society that we now live in. My sons are different and feel comfortable being naked in gyms. We also have to remember that family life has crumbled over the past 4 decades. There are no fathers in many homes and the fathers that are there are distant. All you have to do is teach elementary school and see how many boys are fatherless--the only men in their lives are the hap-hazard boy friends of their mothers who only appear and disappear. They only come around to have sex with the boys' mothers and then don't come back until they need to get their jollys again. It is sad. In my opinion, a big part of the disintegration of our society is because men (fathers and single men) don't accept their working orders to be men--responsible men--and raise their families or influence boys accordingly. I see it every day--unattached grown men just hanging out with no plans for the future except what they are going to do next to satisfy themselves.

Well, enough of this....I've taught my boys and my nephews who were "fatherless" that you can break the cycle by not being like the rest of society. Be a positive influences in the lives of boys and men...we can make a difference.

I don't know why the smily face appeared on my post where there should have been the number "8" for eight boys.
    Alexco35 replied to goingcommando's response:
Great words of wisdom going commando, I wish I had the opportunity to be a father...but thats not in the cards for me...* I placed an 8 to see if i get a smiley face..

Like all the others, I will say that I am too young to know about nude swim teams... I will confess to you that I was on my high school team for 4 years. It was always a winter sport here in Michigan, and it started in November, and went into March... Every year during Christmas break, we would have practices and we were all nude... it started as a joke when I was a freshman because we had a female coach... and we just kept it going through all of the Christmas breaks and for all the years we were there..... it was a lot of fun, I have to admit.

I am also too young to have experienced this myself but I do know that my dad's generation routinely swam naked growing up. He lived in a small town and there was no swim team but there were lakes all around and it was normal for guys to stop at the lake for a swim, never bothering with a suit. By the time I was in locker rooms at school, swimsuits were worn for swim portion of PE classes but showers in both the pool locker room and the regular gym locker room were wide open and it was just expected that guys would be naked. I agree with all of the posts stating that there are far too many hangups about normal casual nudity.
    calvinrankin7 replied to Commando14's response:
i think the hangups come from homosexuality being more prevalent. like people are worried that if a guy sees another guy naked and he likes it he is gay. and generally being gay isnt a good thing, hence why gay marriage is illegal (i am not against gay marriage however). if people/the government were more accepting of homosexuality then people probably wouldnt care as much about being nude infront of the same sex

it's an interesting phenemenon that new gyms coming online are being designed with individual privacy shower stalls. I like the new Y facility I joined but it too has this set up. Comical, because most guys just exit the shower to walk buck naked to their locker and bat the breeze in their birthday suit! Albeit, these would be the more mature members; the young guys are still pulling the underwear up under their skirted oversized bath towel. Ah . . to each, his own.

I went to a large city junior high in 1960, and all 7th grade boys were required to take swimming classes. I remember on the first day, the coaches explained to us that we would swim in the nude. I remember boys asking why, and the coaches said we would have to get use to being nude with each other because that would happen in the military (as though ALL of us would be in the military). By the way, later I was in the military, and saw little nudity during basic training or later. 90% of guys were pretty modest. One boy also asked if the girls had to swim nude, and we were told no. It never made sense to any of us.

My most embarrassing moment came when the coach made me get out of the water, and lay on my back to instruct me better on the backstroke. Everyone was of course staring at my displayed crotch, and my penis at 12 was barely starting to grow. I always thought this coach was a bit of a pervert. I would never embarrass a child like that. There was one older boy (must have failed a grade) that had a sizeable flaccid penis, and he was teased by the others because of his size. Sadly, as I remember it, I think his flaccid penis was probably larger than mine ever got. *

We used to swim naked in the ocean when we were kids - and later when we were older if no adults were around. Swim class was speedos, even if they didn't fit and fell down regularly. Showers were open stall but nobody really gave anyone a bad time. I did go to a fitness club that was male only every other day and on those days the pool was typically filled with naked guys.
    Hard08 replied to gymguygreg's response:
I agree ! So many people put nudity out of context . There is nothing wrong with nudity. We ALL were born naked and everyone knows what we have. No big deal. I myself would go to a male only fitness center and there , I and other guys swim naked, hottubs and etc. Dr's says its better to swim in the pool naked than having clothes on. Clothes or swim wear slows you dwn and clothes have dye in them that you do not want in the pool. When I get off wrk at midnight in the summer, I go skinny dippen in the swimmimg pool ALL the time . There other guy friends skinning dip with me as well.
Last Note: Overseas has statues male in the nude in parks, city district and etc. They have no problem with it there . Its a sin... People !! Grow up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    gq12 replied to Hard08's response:
I swim all the time naked in the summer at my house, but there I am alone. It feels great regardless, but I would L-O-V-E to have a gym where there were men-only facilities for swimming, sauna, steamroom, jaquzzi, etc but all are co-ed and require swimwear...
    HairyD replied to gq12's response:
Alexco, during our swim team pratice we always wore suit. But when we had extra practice at night or Saturday. Coach always made us do light shower before entering the pool. We go from locker room to the pool. Then warm up exercise at pool side and hit the pool. The coach was dress. But if he wanted give a example of a drive or stoke. He stripped and hit the pool; then remain nude until we hit the showers. You ask about parents. Since must of the guys did not have cars. The father that brought us to practice would stay and watch. Others would return early and watch. A few times a year in the spring the dads would strip. Jump into the pool after our practice. There was no discussing since we were all males we should not be nude. The fathers had been in our locker rooms after matches and football games, ect.
