Has anyone had experience with Immune Boosting supplements ?
I was treated for skin Melanoma on my scalp and knowing it may return at some point, I would like to boost my system to fight off any foreign invaders. I use vitamins and eat well although I've heard of Beta Glucan and Resveritaol/Red wine extracts supplements. Does any one have any thing with true science behind it for supplements to boost your bodys protection? Thanks a Bunch & God Bless.

Michael W Steppie, MD responded:
Scientists now recognize that adequately feeding your immune system boosts its fighting power against disease. Nutritionally-oriented physicians like me believe that including antioxidants in your daily routine is a good start. Antioxidants help to protect our DNA from damage by free radicals and radiation. Free radicals are a byproduct of normal metabolism and exposure to toxins and radiation. The presence of free radicals eventually results in early cell death, which contributes to the development of a number of diseases as well as to the accelerated growth of mutated cells. The latter may lead to cancer and premature aging. Antioxidants help counter this "chain reaction." Berries, carotenoids such as lycopene, resveratrol, and many other nutrients /supplements may join this list of antioxidants; currently, more research is needed.

Let's also not forget also that other "healthy" habits are crucial daily exercise, even it is simply taking a walk around a few blocks, promotes oxygen flow and blood circulation throughout the body. Watch out for bad "habits": For instance, stress and the over-consumption of sugar and processed foods as well as smoking and excessive drinking of alcohol are known to severely suppress the immune system.
