UV Radiation and Sun Hazards in Your Car

Michael W Steppie, MD posted:
Now that the summer is over, many of you may feel that you can let your guard down when it comes to sun protectionâ?¦ Yet did you know that the sun's UVA, or "aging" rays, penetrate the skin more deeply than UVB, or "burning rays"? However, unlike UVB, it is relatively equal in intensity year-round. Simply walking from your house to your mailbox and driving in your car (since UVA passes through window glass) exposes you to significant UVA radiation. In addition, up to 80 percent of UV rays can penetrate clouds. This is why it is so important to wear protective clothing and broad-spectrum sunscreen throughout the year.
Learn more about UVA radiation and how it passes through car windows in the article "Sun Hazards in Your Car" from the 2011 edition of The Skin Cancer Foundation Journal.
