Menopause Sympton

I am 52. I just went off the pill in March so it has only been about 4 weeks. I immediately starting getting hot flashes many times during the day, which I only got when I had my period while I was on the pill. Last week, I began getting the preliminary signs that I may get my period, cramping, headaches, bloating, etc. Is that expected when you first go off the pill?

Mary Jane Minkin, MD responded:
Dear Chocosusie,
If you do indeed end up with a period, you are still not fully menopausal, but still perimenopausal. If you are still fairly symptomatic, and otherwise were doing well with your pills, you might want to speak with your health care provider about going back on the pill for another year or so; hopefully by that time you will be fully menopausal. Another suggestion: if you do go back on the pill, I'd stop next time in October or November: if you start getting symptoms, it will be cool out-
Good luck,
Mary Jane

Thank you for your response. Actually, I still have not gotten my period, which would now make me overdue. Also, other than the hot flashes, all the other symptoms have disappeared. I'll give it some more time and see what happens. And I must say, these hot flashes are quite riduculous. At least my husband will be happy when we install the air conditioners. I usually hate having them on all night, but I'll probably welcome it now. Fans, they are my friend now, too!!

Thank you again for your response.
