hot flashes

had a LAVH 4 weeks ago and now i and having hot flashes like mad.i wake up at night hot then i get to cold and its drivring me crazy.it happenes in the day to.is there anything that works before i spend money on alot of stuff that doesnt.all my dr said was to try vitaim E.

Dear Falls47,
You didn't mention if they took out your ovaries or not; if they are still in you, they will hopefully "wake up" soon, and start giving you back some of your estrogen. If they were taken out, then your symptoms will likely last longer. If you want to try over the counter remedies, black cohosh such as Remifemin, and isoflavones (the weak plant estrogens that are in soy) such as the product Icool, may well help. However most women will do quite well on estrogen; and remember, that in the WHI group of women who took estrogen alone (no progestin because they had had a hysterectomy) after 7 years of therapy, they did not notice any increased risk of breast cancer. You can even get bioidentical estrogens from your doctor, in the form of transdermal patches or gels, if you wish.
