Vaginal Odor

I had a hysterectomy about 2 1/2 years ago. After my surgery, I had a HORRIBLE odor that was like old pus for a couple of months. I hadn't had any more problems until about 2 months ago, I started having a really bad external vaginal itch that would just not quit. My doctor prescribed premarin vag 0.625. I guess it helped a little bit, but now this horrible odor has come back with the discharge. I am not sure if it is the cream build up or what. Someone please help. I am already self conscious and this worries me more. Would douching be a bad idea? How do I get rid of this odor once again?

Mary Jane Minkin, MD responded:
Dear An_245573,
Not sure exactly what to make of the odor; it could be related to a bacterial vaginal infection. A couple of suggestions: yes, a douche would be fine-you just don't want to douche too often, as it can dry you out. One other suggestion: to keep the vagina free of infections, maintaining an acid pH is helpful. There is an over the counter product called refresh, which will help acidify the vagina; you may want to give that a go, and it does help many women.
Good luck,
Mary Jane
