I am a 51 year old women who hasn't had a periodi in three years. I lost my sex drive. Over two years ago my boyfriend started to date a married woman for sex. Now that relationship has grown into a steady friendship. How did I handle the jealousy.

Mary Jane Minkin, MD responded:
Dear Atvqueen,
Sorry to hear about the relationship issues; and I'm sure many of our community members will have suggestions. As far as the libido issue, I would encourage you to look at the section on the website of the North American Menopause Society, menopause.org, which does have a section, notably on testosterone, which is one of the hormones that has been implicated in libido. Estrogen therapy has certainly been suggested as well. Some clinicians recommend DHEA, which is actually available over the counter (estrogen and testosterone require prescriptions.) Some over the counter remedies include Hot Plants for Her, and Zestra; I would suggest reading up on those on line, and see if they sound like something you would like to try. And then of course I would suggest speaking to your health care provider about how these options might work for you.
Are you experiencing discomfort with sex? Vaginal dryness can certainly be a major turnoff, of course. If this is a problem, you can certainly try an over the counter moisturizer like Replens, which can be very helpful to use on an ongoing basis. If that doesn't work totally, then you can speak with your health care provider about prescription vaginal estrogens.
So there are lots of things that can help-don't give up!
Good luck,
Mary Jane
