Mary Jane Minkin, MD responded:
Dear laugh57,
I'm not sure exactly why the ibuprofen, except for cramping; it certainly can be helpful for that. In the perimenopausal time frame, one approach to avoid heavy bleeding is to take some progesterone type medications for 10-12 days every three months or so; it "tricks" your uterus into thinking you've ovulated, and will help clean the uterus out of any accumulated lining that happens to be hanging around. If you haven't build up too much tissue, that's fine; you won't bleed much. That approach I think is more likely to work than taking ibuprofen for heavy bleeding.
Good luck,
Mary Jane
