Mary Jane Minkin, MD replied to deanie64's response:
Dear Deanie64,
I hope your doctor can help you. Has your doctor made sure that there isn't a problem with your uterus causing the bleeding (like a fibroid, or a polyp, or overgrowth of the lining of the uterus?)-heavy bleeding certainly can go along with the perimenopausal state, especially since you are having other symptoms, like hot flashes. If you are a good candidate for birth control pills, a low dose pill might well be able to help your heavy bleeding and relieve your hot flashes. If you aren't a good pill candidate, something like a Mirena IUD might help the heavy bleeding, although it probably wouldn't help the hot flash issue. So do check in with your health care provider to see if one of these options might be helpful for you.
Good luck,
Mary Jane
