i've been going thru menopause for about 3 yrs now and have noticed a significant loss of muscle mass. Could this change have an effect on my sense of balance during activities such as bike riding, skate boarding?

Mary Jane Minkin, MD responded:
Dear rjzamm,
Indeed, men, too lose muscle mass over the course of time-some component can be just related to us getting older. Are you doing some strength training? It does help. An excellent book on maintaining strength, both bone and muscles, is by Tuft's exercise physiology expert Miriam Nelson, called "Strong Women, Strong Bones"-excellent guidance on all sorts of training. She also has tips on sense of balance issues, too.
Good luck,
Mary Jane
