Bleeding after Menopause
avatar
AlyCat8 posted:
Hi, I am over 50 and haven't had a period since Feb 2008. This morning I noticed bright red blood when I went to the bathroom along with some cramping as if I were having a period. Could this be a sign of something serious?
Thanks so much!

Mary Jane Minkin, MD responded:
Dear AlyCat8,
Our usual recommendation to all women is that if you have bleeding farther out than one year after your last period to contact your gynecologist, and I would recommend that here. It is entirely possible (particularly since you are young) that this could just be some spontaneous ovarian activity, you still should check in with your doc. (S)he may want to do an ultrasound or sampling of the lining of your uterus.
Good luck,
Mary Jane
