I have gone a year and a half without a period. Went through some hot times, not full flashes, some mood swings, but pretty evened out. I have had rapid heart and my doctor put me on estrogen. I have taken it for 5 days and today I started a period:( she said to take progestrone every 3 months to have a period, but I was not expecting to start in 5 days of taking this. I have gained a lot of weight these past 2-3 years as I went almost a year without a period, then had one then went the year and half, i thought it may be causing my weight gain, hormone inbalance. Thats why i agreed to try the estrogen, I have lost 2 -3 lbs this week. could taking the estrogen be helping lose belly fat? If so I will be willing to have a period, but don't want to do the monthly one anymore. What should I do?

Mary Jane Minkin, MD responded:
Dear Annettelynnb,
Do tell your health care provider that you are having some bleeding; it may have been triggered by the estrogen, but it does bear some investigation. Don't give up on the estrogen; after being on it for a while, in general it does not trigger bleeding. Can estrogen help with belly fat? It can have some impact, not a huge impact in general. But it may make you feel better, so that you'll feel better about sticking to a good nutrition plan and getting lots of exercise, all of which can help.
Good luck,
Mary Jane
