Basal Body Temperature Question

An_246914 posted:
I will be 53 in one month. I skipped my first period in October 2010.It's been a bit of a roller coaster since.

I am charting my BBT in effort to have some clue as to what my body is doing. In the last year, I have only had 3 BBT spikes (ovulation) followed by a period. The last one was April 3, 2012.

My BBT chart is currently at cycle day 146, with no spike in temperature, my temperatures are bobbling just under 97 degrees. I also notice that I have very little cervical mucus. (sorry tmi)

In this very long cycle, I had several episodes of spotting but that stopped 2 weeks ago.

I have no hot flashes. I do have random episodes of dizziness and an occasional occular migraine.

How far into peri am I?
What can I expect as times goes on?
If I make it to 365 days without a temperature spike (Ovulation) can I stop using birth control ?

Dear An_246914,
You bring up many good issues. First of all, regarding the contraception: it would be very unlikely for you to get pregnant at this point, but the official recommendation would be to wait for one full year without a period to officially stop using contraception. I wouldn't bother too much with the basal body temperatures; they don't tell you all that much in this situation, including telling you when the ups and downs of hormonal production will stop-and alas, there really is no great predictor out there. What we can tell you is that different symptoms of hormonal fluctuations will get better over time, but we really cannot tell you when that will be: a few months to a few years.Sorry this situation is so frustrating.
Good luck,
Mary Jane
