Annual Exams
An_248233 posted:
Is it necessary to have an annual gyno exam if I have had a mastectomy and am post menapausal. Since they only do a pap test every three years now, I am wondering.
Mary Jane Minkin, MD responded:
Dear An_248233,
This is a question that is being asked regularly these days, and you will get different answers (see some of the replies even today)-I still encourage folks to have a regular exam; even without a pap, if you still have pelvic organs, I think they merit a check up (although that has been a debated topic particularly over the last year, as questions revolve around how much is picked up in a woman without symptoms.) However, I think it's a good idea to visit with a health care professional regularly, to see how you're doing on nutrition, exercise and other issues (now that doesn't have to be a gynecologist). So even a straightforward question like this has several answers!
Good luck, and stay well,
Mary Jane
