Premature Menopause
An_249357 posted:
I am 33 and recently found out that I am in menopause. My ob-gyn prescribed me Lo Loestrin to alleviate the symptoms specifically depression and anxiety that I am having. However, since i have started the pill my depression has gotten worse as well as my anxiety. What other treat options are available?

Mary Jane Minkin, MD responded:
Dear An_249357,
I think the choice of a low dose birth control pill was an excellent one by your ob-gyn. However, Loloestrin is such a low dose pill, that you actually might benefit from a slightly higher dose of estrogen. Also, women react differently to the different progestins in different birth control pills. I would suggest that you consider a pill such as Yaz; it has 20 micrograms of ethinyl estradiol (the estrogen part) as compared to 10 in the Loloestrin; and the progestin in Yaz, called drospirenone, is less likely to adversely affect mood. So I think you might well feel better on that. Do speak with your doctor about that as an option.
Good luck,
Mary Jane
