I have been going through peri-menopause now for about 10 years, I found Black Cohash a huge help in relief from hot flashes. Mine were so regular I could tell what time of day it was by the flash. It takes a while to build up in your system, and one should not take it if on an estrogen supplement. I also have been avoiding HRT because of the close association to cancer. Going through menopause the natural way is very difficult, but I am sure I will get through it!!!! When others at work are freezing and I am looking for an open window, when my husband is putting more covers on the bed and I am throwing them off, I try to remind myself that doing this "el natural" is better for me!!!! The hot flashes are less and not as intense as they once were, however, they have not disappeared!!!!

Mary Jane Minkin, MD responded:
Hi everyone
Just a clarification: it is OK to take black cohosh and estrogen; Black cohosh is not estrogenic, and although we don't know its exact mechanism to help with hot flashes, it is different than the estrogen receptor. Most folks do not end up being on both, but there isn't a safety issue on it,
