am I completely safe from becoming pregnant after I've completed one year without a period?
Mary Jane Minkin, MD responded:
Dear ridmb,
The answer yes, if we are sure this is menopause. For example, if a very young woman loses her period for a year secondary to anorexia (which can happen), and then she regains her weight, she can start having ovarian activity again, and yes, she could become pregnant. However, if you are 51 years old and have not had your period for a year, we can safely assume you are indeed fully menopausal, and yes, you can stop using birth control-congratulations!
